Lisa Carter-Bawa, PhD, MPH, APRN, ANP-C, FAAN, FSBM speaks on grantsmanship, scientific communication, and the translation gaps that determine whether research gets funded. Her talks draw on nearly two decades as a behavioral scientist, NIH-funded investigator, and NIH peer reviewer — offering audiences both the science of clear communication and the practical tools to apply it immediately.

Speaking Topics
Lost in Translation: Why Good Science Doesn't Get Funded
Most grants fail not because the science is weak, but because the translation is. This talk introduces the Five Translation Gaps framework and shows scientists where their applications lose reviewers — and what to do about it.
The New Review Landscape: What the NIH 2025 Simplified Review Framework Changes for Your Grant
Three scoring factors instead of five. A leveled playing field for early-career investigators. And a shift in what reviewers are told to focus on. This talk breaks down what changed, what it means for your next submission, and how to write directly to the new framework.
The Advocate's Voice: Writing So Reviewers Can Fight for You
After individual scoring, your assigned reviewer stands up in a room you'll never enter and argues for your grant. Did you give them the words to do that? This talk teaches scientists to write borrowable language that equips reviewers to advocate effectively.
Lost in Translation: The Gap Between What We Say and What Patients Hear
How do we close the gap between what science knows and what communities experience? This talk explores the barriers, the breakthroughs, and what it takes to truly reach people.
